Unleash the Rotary Power: 1993 Mazda RX-7

The Rx7 is in my opinion one of the best looking, all-around well-performing cars to ever come out of Japan. I loved them from the first time I saw one. Initial D was also a huge inspiration and motivation for what I wanted the car to become. One day I knew it would be yellow with aggressive aero.

Unleash the Rotary Power: 1993 Mazda RX-7

Hello, I’m Chris. Born and raised in Richmond Virginia I’m an automotive refinish technician for a local collision shop and do custom work from time to time as well. As a kid, I spent the majority of my free time designing cars for games like Need for Speed Underground, Midnight Club, Forza, Gran Turismo etc It has always been my passion and dream to build custom cars for people and myself.

I’ve been into cars since I can remember, As a young boy I would go to classic car shows and import car shows and drag races with my dad. We bonded a lot over cars often. The first time I saw an Rx7 in person as a kid I fell in love with its sleek timeless design. I told myself I’d get one one day. Turns out that day came sooner than expected as I found one for a great deal right before my 16th birthday and begged my dad to front the money for me and I’d work to pay him back. To my surprise, he agreed and I had a base model automatic Montego blue fd for my first car at 16. Unbelievable. I’m very fortunate and thankful for my awesome father for the start of my rotary journey.

The Rx7 is in my opinion one of the best-looking, all-around well-performing cars to ever come out of Japan. I loved them from the first time I saw one. Initial D was also a huge inspiration and motivation for what I wanted the car to become. One day I knew it would be yellow with aggressive aero. It took me some time to complete this dream as the responsibilities of life took priority for some years along with some difficult times. Nonetheless, I never had it in me to give up on this car despite quite a bit of bad luck as well. The rotary engine is temperamental and high maintenance but the uniqueness and sound make me not want to stray away.

I have a real issue with not being able to leave things as they are. I always have a vision of builds and styles influenced by other cars I see online or in person. I’ve always been pretty creative I’d like to think and I see cars as a canvas for self-expression and to showcase one’s style. Along with heavy influences from Initial D and Options magazine and other Japanese automotive media outlets. I really fell in love with the grassroots time attack scene in Japan when I discovered the Narita Dogfight blogs.

Such amazing coverage and even more amazing cars just lured me in and never let me go. I absolutely love the style and dedication of the Time Attack guys and had to build one of my own to represent and show respect to that Japanese style here in America. I wanted to bring that time attack style to my build but also keep in touch with the initial d influence as well. I also wanted to keep it periodically correct to that 90's era styling.

It never really feels real. It’s been decades of dreaming of building and owning a car like this. I really love seeing the kid's reaction to the car as I remember being a youngin having those same reactions when I saw a cool car. I hope it inspires them and adults alike to dream big and never give up on that dream. It’s also such a blast to drive the rotary sound and how well the fd platform handles just makes it a true driving enthusiast's car. There’s not another car I'd wish to have over the fd.

I think my car is unique because you don’t see too many Japanese-style time attack builds in the States. The car has a lot of attention to detail in the small things which to me is important in a build. It’s easy to settle for good and not achieve greatness. Rx7s are pretty uncommon in general but a fully modified one that is bold and aggressive is really a rare sight to see.

Future Plans

I’m sure I’ll find things to upgrade over time. Like a full fuel cell, dull dry carbon doors and hatch to replace the season stuff I have now and a dry carbon dash and who knows what else. For now, I just want to enjoy driving the car on the road and of course on the track!

Advice/Tips

The Rx7 platform is a true enthusiast car. Do your research and be ready to spend some money. Stay on top of maintenance and reliability mods. Don’t sacrifice quality with these cars as they are so temperamental at times.

Club

@Regimentzero

It has brought me a community of like-minded people to share ideas with. Life-long friends have been made and memories will remain for as long as I live. I do think the car scene has made a change for the worse in recent years but hopefully, it can evolve itself into something even greater than it was in the good ole days.
