Christopher Calden - 1993 Mazda RX7

He would say it was the video game Gran Turismo that started his love for cars. JDM type cars were his favourite. He would spend days modifying Toyota Supras, Honda Civics, and Mazda RX7s. Then when the movie Fast and Furious came out the import car scene kinda peaked and he started to show up to meets in his 2002 Civic or 2000 Civic Si.

“If you think it's blown, it’s probably blown.’ ~ Christopher C.

Christopher is a quiet fellow who resides in Northern California with his wife and 2 girls. He’s been involved with the car scene for almost 20 years now.

So what got him into cars, to begin with? He would say it was the video game Gran Turismo that started his love for cars. JDM type cars were his favourite. He would spend days modifying Toyota Supras, Honda Civics, and Mazda RX7s. Then when the movie Fast and Furious came out the import car scene kinda peaked and he started to show up to meets in his 2002 Civic or 2000 Civic Si.

But why build an FD?  His answer, always FD. He says It’s the perfect looking car; Japan's prettiest. He loves rotary engines as they are just so unique and “cool”. Christopher used to own a 1987 Mazda RX7 GXL. He swapped the stock engine for a 13BRE-TT rotary engine; also known as the Mazda Wankel Engine.  This laid the groundwork that really got him into the rotary scene.

Before the rotary days began Christopher had a few other cars. He passed his drivers test in a Mercury station wagon but then drove it straight into the Civic scene. He built a Civic complete with lS-VTEC, supercharged-b18c, and turbo-b18c. During his Honda days, he did pick up and began modifying a Mazda FC RX7. Shortly after that he purchased a new EVO IX and began to modify it. Thinking about it Christopher would say he scooped up his FD about 9 years ago in Hollywood, California. The FD had always been his dream project. The car was in OK condition and pretty stock which gave him a lot of room to play with it.

Christopher loves seeing his car at any angle. He could sit in his garage and stare at it for hours. It definitely gets an immense amount of attention which is pretty fun for him. He receives a lot of questions usually in regard to how rare it is or if I LS swapped it. It’s what he was shooting for with his build as a show ‘n’ go vehicle.

Many new builders across the globe are always asking for advice. What parts should I get? Has anyone run into any types of issues? Christopher has a few thoughts on that.

“The forums are a great but ageing source. FB groups are present and there's a community. These types of cars either need dedication or a really good shop to be built right so anticipate some time with your car.”

I asked Christopher what makes his FD different and unique in comparison to other builds out there. It was a simple answer, “It’s a JDM legendary rotary FD monster! I think pop culture has helped with the allure of the car.”

Most of the work was done by Christopher himself including a custom wire tuck harness, but one shop that did help him out was It’s Garage Life. They assisted with the tuning and engine keg. A few others assisted as well with the build here and there: @coreyforget, @clutchkick86, and @jasonforget.

Christopher would like to give a special shout out to Garage Perfect @realgarageperfect, @rotary_gang_2020. “They are all a bunch of good guys,” he says.

Few final words from Christopher “I've encountered a lot of different people from the scene, some who I actually still keep in contact with because of it. What gives me the most gratification is my oldest daughter loving to ride in the FD with me and her excitement towards the next car show.”

Christophers’s dream car is a new Tesla.
