Haley Ferner - 2015 Nissan 370Z Nismo Tech

Some of my modifications are similar to other 370Zs, but parts of them are different. The body kit was fully moulded to the car as I preferred a more clean look but leaves a little bit of a lip to show it's a widebody kit and not OEM.

“It’s a never-ending battle of making your cars better and also trying to be better yourself.”

~ Dale Earnhardt

I was born in Ohio but was raised in Houston, TX. I am 29 years old, currently working for a Global Valve and Automation Manufacturing Company. I went to Texas A&M for Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology and graduated in 2014. This really all started with my dad, as he is a big car enthusiast and worked with Shell/Pennzoil for most of my life.

We would go to races as a family, visit the pits, meet the drivers and we would watch car movies at home. He also liked to work on his own projects, mostly older muscle cars and that is what originally piqued my interest. Once I got older, I gravitated towards the import scene after watching Fast and Furious movies and starting to venture out to car events around town.

That's when I fell in love with the culture, the planning of building your car, meeting a lot of new people and travelling all over town or out of town for big events. So this was my first car coming out of college that I have put any work into, and was actually deciding between a few vehicles at the time. I wanted to pick a car that was not extremely common, enjoyed driving, loved the potential build of the car, and one that I could be taken seriously for once I started to build.

This car at first was not much visually, but as I started planning and modifying it turned out to be the best decision for me. This was not the first vehicle I owned but was the first vehicle I modified. In high school, my parents gave my brother and me both a Pontiac Grand Am, which has no modifying potential and was falling apart. Once I graduated high school and went to college I had an ‘07 mustang. I did not do any major modifications to it, only simple things like the sound system. I didn't look back when I sold that to buy the 370z and have been proud ever since. I am very proud of the way I have built the car and I still get excited to see it when I drive it around town.

If you enjoyed this Car why not read this ONE HERE

When kids see the car and I see them get excited and ask to sit inside, it definitely puts a smile on my face and reminds me of why I built it myself. I definitely built it for my own passion as I love the way it turned out, but I do also love the way people talk about it and ask me questions for inspiration on their own builds. The most excited I have been with this car was when DK (Brian Tee) awarded me his favourite car at the Anime Matsuri show in Houston a few years back. I actually teared up when I saw him handing it to me.

This car is known for a failure of the slave cylinder which happened to me at a car meet a while back. Make sure to upgrade to an aftermarket kit or check for one already if buying used, as the OEM is known for multiple failures, and some dealerships won't cover it under warranty. The gas tank does not always read the amount of gas correctly (only sometimes at < 1/4 tank), this also won't be fixed by the dealer unless it's happening at the moment it's brought in. A tip for bodywork, never go with the cheapest shop, my best experience with bodywork was with a shop on the higher end of cost but I have had the best experience and the best work done by them. If you plan on replacing the exhaust, even on a new model, the 'demon bolts' are called that for a reason. You will likely need a torch if you don't want to break multiple sockets (like I did).

Some of my modifications are similar to other 370Zs, but parts of them are different. The body kit was fully moulded to the car as I preferred a more clean look but leaves a little bit of a lip to show it's a widebody kit and not OEM. I also had it painted an aftermarket colour, not one by Nissan but shared with BMW/Porsche as I loved the look of a deep blue with some purple hues. I have a custom steering wheel by Carismo, which was a one-off piece of forged carbon. My wheels are Work CR3P but were built with specific specs for the widebody in mind. Other Z's may have Work wheels or even the same model, but usually 2 pieces. I also have work done to the headlights and under lighting, done by Houston Halos that differ slightly from other Z's.

My car wouldn't be where it is today without some help from others…

I do not have any current plans for this car as I am pretty happy with how it is, for now, maybe a few accent interior pieces and a cleaner trunk setup in the future. I thought about selling the car, but haven't truly made up my mind yet. I have a lot of emotional connection to this build and maybe only if the offer is right. I do have two other cars I plan to modify, but for different reasons. The Porsche is getting some carbon parts like a hood, wing mid-blade, front lip, rear diffuser, side extensions and more. For the 240SX, I would like to upgrade the turbo, upgraded fuel pump, injectors, boost controller and maybe some suspension work like an angle kit.

The car team I am part of now is Team InMotion (IG: @team_inmotion). I have been with this team for a few years now and they have been an amazing group of people that I love to spend time with and have become close friends with all of them. We have been to a few cities together over the years for multiple shows and events and they always support me with my cars but also with personal goals. I have also been a part of Zociety and other Z groups as they have been the source of information on how to improve, build, and fix common issues.

The scene has brought a lot of good and some negative. I am very proud of the friends I have now through my team and through the support of the shops that have helped build my car. I am happy with the other friends in Houston I have in the car scene and have learned a lot about myself in the process.

My dream car is hands down Porsche, 718 GT4RS or 997.2 911 modified are my favourites. I did just purchase a Porsche for myself (997.1), but I will strive to reach this goal in the future. :)
