Ninety2 Automotive Photographer – Mel Higgins

I’ve always had a love for cars, even from a young age (and before I picked up a camera). My earliest memory of getting into the wonderful world of cars was playing Gran Turismo 3 on PS2

Ninety2 Automotive Photographer – Mel Higgins

Hey I’m Mel, owner of and photographer for Ninety2 Automotive, you might have seen some of my photos from shows we’ve attended, or shoots I’ve been running. I am currently based in and around Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, South Warwickshire, and North Wiltshire, though I do travel for shoots and shows!

Come and take a look at some of the work we do on:

I have, certainly in more recent years, immersed myself in the car scene and am Official Photographer for Cars of the Cotswolds, Gloucester Car Enthusiasts, Modified RCZ Owners Club, and Society’s Hated Car Enthusiasts. I have also trained as an Advanced Driver with Gloucestershire Advanced Motorists/IAM RoadSmart and RoSPA, and am a qualified ADI (Driving Instructor) – maybe one day I’ll try my hand at Race Instruction… One day…!

Motoring Shows

I enjoy several shows in a year, though my favourite shows are anywhere there are plenty of dogs to fuss over, which is most shows – am I right?! I am guilty of attending mostly VW focused shows, though I am branching out in recent years and experiencing the wider car scene more carefully! I am able to book ‘Mini Photoshoots’ at shows like the recent one with Will Shand’s RCZ GT, or individual/group shots.

Individual Photoshoots

I have recently had quite a few interesting shoots with a few interesting vehicles, Will’s RCZ GT (full photoshoot here), Emma Louise’s Purple Abarth (full photoshoot here), and Neil’s BMW E92 M3 (full photoshoot here), and Callum’s fantastic Ford Capri (if he’s reading this, he’ll be waiting for me to mention my Dad had one of these, but I won’t mention it……). However, I think my all-time favourite, has to be this incredibly well-built and high spec 720bhp Ford Escort RS Cosworth from James. To see (and hear) this in action on the roads is honestly life-changing!

Get to Know The Lady Behind the Camera

I’ve always had a love for cars, even from a young age (and before I picked up a camera). My earliest memory of getting into the wonderful world of cars was playing Gran Turismo 3 on PS2, very old school & falling for a Triumph Spitfire 1500 on the follow up PS2 game Gran Turismo 4.

My Dad, I’m sure, would now take the opportunity to tell you of how when I was still eating sat in a high-chair, we’d both be watching the F1, and I, more than most, loved it! So perhaps ‘cars’ are a more deep-rooted love than I realise!

My Car History

My car history is a bit shocking really – I started out with a VW Golf MK4, Indigo Blue – nothing special, a 1.6 S… It got me from A-to-B & it was a cracking little car to drive. I lost the car in an RTC (non-fault!) and it took me about a year and a half to even consider driving another car again. Insurance priced another Golf out of the market for me, but it has always left me pining after another.

I picked up my current car in 2015, a VW Polo 9N3 1.9tdi PD130 GT Sport, which apparently isn’t a very common spec (who knew?!). I’ve done a few bits to her to smart her up, however, the bigger costs are heading my way, the clutch isn’t far off I suspect. But once done, I’ll be able to continue where I left off on the mods. Currently, she’s running… maybe I should leave it there lol… She’s on Bilstein B14s fitted by V-Hub Performance, BBS San Marino Split Rim Alloys, I have painted a few bits of the interior, dyed the headliner black etc. Currently trying to find the right set of wheels to replace the BBS’, but apparently it needs a clutch and flywheel first… The plan is to do some subtle changes to the exterior, and get an engine tune, maybe even let it return to the track! You can follow Polo’s build on Instagram: @Princess_9n3.

3 years ago I finally got my hands on another MK4 Golf (same colour), just the PD150 version – in those 3 years, I’ve driven it a grand total of… wait for it… 5 miles! The idea being I would modify it lightly, and let it take over as the Daily, but plans a.k.a. Polo’s maintenance bills said “No”. Lockdown has been kind to the Golf allowing me to crack on with a few bits of maintenance to get it ready for its first MOT in 4 years. He will be lowered ever so slightly, I have my eye on a set of Audi rims for it, the body kit is ready for paint, it’ll want an exhaust in the first year of driving it, and I am looking forward to hearing the difference. I only have an old photo of the Golf, you can follow the build on Instagram: @archer_gti.

I try to do the work on my cars myself, though I am still learning. 9 times out of 10, I break something and need rescuing from a few of my (incredibly patient) friends!

My dream car(s) are a Triumph Stag (kitted out with all the latest gadgets), which will be my next purchase, and of course everyone’s bedroom wall poster – the Ferrari F40!
